Design for Democracy

AIGA, the professional association for design, invited designers of all specialties to participate in a non-partisan, get out the vote poster campaign. Through its “Design for Democracy” campaign, designers could create posters aimed at promoting participation in U.S. elections. Many of the submitted posters were printed and on display at the AIGA National Conference held in Seattle, WA in late October 2022.

There is an online gallery of posters that I recommend checking out! You will also find information and guidelines on submitting a poster of your own.

Upon seeing them in person in Seattle, this one poster stood out to me. Interestingly, it stood out amongst the other posters on display just as the designer describes the visuals of the poster. It is titled “Vote through the Noise,” and designer Jason Ball (twitter: @MiresBall) writes:

Politics is frustrating. And the urge to allow that frustration to take over our thinking is hard to ignore.

To redirect the angst people feel around participating in the process, we visualized a range of unproductive responses with primitive, block-printed lettering that fills the frame. Together with a dull, muted blue, it becomes background noise—ultimately leading to an eye-catching red that puts the focus back on the one action we can all take to have an impact.
